Cuba designated a State Sponsor of Terrorism

Cuba was placed on the State Department's list of state sponsors of terrorism, established under Section 6(j) of the Export Administration Act, Section 620A of the Foreign Assistance Act, and related provisions. Cuba was among the first countries listed.

The designation imposed an additional sanctions layer — distinct from the trade embargo — including prohibitions on U.S. foreign assistance, restrictions on exports, and U.S. opposition to loans by international financial institutions. It remained in force until 2015.
